Neft and Petroleum in Ottoman, which is based on the
meticulous research and investigation carried out for 13 years
by the author, discusses in detail the petroleum phenomenon
during the Ottoman Empire Era. The study, which appraises more
than one hundred original documents obtained from the Ottoman
Archives, also reviews almost all previous literature. In this
context, the book is not only about the petroleum history but
also about the energy history, discussing the major
economical and political dynamics of energy resources.
Since the words "neft" and "petroleum" are often used together
by Ottomans, the author, following this tradition, used the
Eastern-originated word “Neft” and the Western-originated word
“Petroleum” at the title of his book to emphasize that the
Ottomans remained in between the two civilizations trying
to benefit from both. As in many other fields, the Ottoman
Empire was successful in catching up the world's energy
consumption trends but failed to keep up with the production
trends. Among others, this was the major reason for her
problems leading to the disintegration of the empire.
The international policies that are applied in the region at
present can, therefore, be traced back to the thousands of
years. Without encoding this genetic code, it will be almost
impossible to understand what is going on today. Neft and
Petroleum in Ottoman will serve as one of the important
source of information on the subject.
